TRIBUTE

TO THE CHILDREN OF AFGHANISTAN AND ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD, BE THEY BELIEVERS OR NOT!

9 September 2001: A dreadful and infamous attempt perpetrated against Ahmad Shah Massoud, a man of exceptional and deep goodness, cost him his life, thus bringing gloom and revolt to the hearts of the people who knew him but also to all those who - by an unforgivable indifference from the Western media, with the exception of Christophe de Ponfilly and his friends - were not even given this opportunity to know him.

In this entirely fictitious story, written to bring a little comfort to the numerous people still mourning his cruel loss, the role of mystic animals has not been neglected - not only Borâq, the magnificient stallion of the Prophet Mahomet, but also the birds and the ants are participants.

In this little collection of poetry, the reader will find several similarities between the different religions, perhaps one more little step towards tolerance and respect due to others and their differences...

May the family, friends, people and all the admirers of the "Light-bearer", find a little relief throughout this fable in which the black notions of politics, hate, fanaticism, war and unhappiness were intentionally excluded.  This in order to give a free access to dream and magic, so fiercely absent in our world, and to show the beauties of the Muslim religion - a faith most hastily and contemptuously disparaged and slandered nowadays.

Best regards and respect to the people of Afghanistan and any other people suffering from racial or religious prejudice.

Monia

You will find here both British and American English, as we chose the first for our personal liking and prefer to leave the second in the tests and poems in which it was placed.  So there is no mistake of spelling here:  (marvellous, marvelous/honour, honor/travelled, traveled/moulded, molded, fulfil, fulfill and so on).

Dear Madam,

You have most willingly sent me a copy of your book of poetry in tribute to Commander Massoud, book of which you are the author.

As you wrote in your letter, my former position of President of the European Parliament, allowed me to welcome officially Commander Massoud in Strasbourg at the beginning of April 2001.

By this invitation, I wanted to mark the political gratefulness of the International Community to a charismatic hero of the Afghani resistance, the man would put an end to ten years of Soviet invasion and fought with determination against the barbaric rule of the Taliban, fanatics who violated the basic rights and human dignity.

Thus, I was deeply touched and stricken with grief at the murder of this man that took place some days before the terrific attacks against the World Trade Center.  We could regret that the Western people did not help him more in his fight.

It is with great emotion that I receive your book today and I sincerely thank you for this gift.

I warmly congratulate you for the quality of your poetry and for generosity towards Afghanistan.

Yours very faithfully,

Nicole Fontaine

Letter from Mrs Nicole Fontaine, former President of the European Parliament, the only French personality who welcomed Massoud during his visit to Paris in April 2001.

LE MONDE EST DANGEREUX A VIVRE NON A CAUSE DE CEUX QUI FONT LE MAL MAIS A CAUSE DE CEUX QUI REGARDENT ET LAISSENT FAIRE ! THIS IS A DIFFICULT WORLD TO LIVE IN NOT BECAUSE OF THOSE WHO DO EVIL BUT BECAUSE OF THOSE WHO LOOK AT IT AND LET IT BE DONE!

Thousands of years ago,

there was a land,
located in the centre of Asia,
where mountains were high
and weather was perfume-like.
Nights were starry,
that made hunger of poets insatiable
and the day sky was so blue
that emitted bunches of hope in the atmosphere.
The winter was cold.. but white.
The summer was hot.. but fruitful..
The fall was so colourful,
that wondered any artist.
The spring was celebrated by the singing of birds,
the budding of flowers,
and the freshness of air,
that awakened any entity who underwent the winter sleep.
The flowing of rivers was from their joy
and the shivering of tall trees was from their dancing by the music of wind.
Ground was rich from minerals..
from the rare uranium to the glittering emerald were to be found..

A heaven-like gift of mother nature.

But.. it all turned into a hell
when the mammoths of that era heard of its beauty, purity, richness and its heart-like-position.
Then the winy weather got thickened by explosive gases,
the seducing sky became a scary and ruining roof,
that began to emit bombs of desperation.
The winter got so cold that thousands of people got frozen,
the summer experienced barrenness and waterlessness,
the fall leaves looked so awkward and smelled so unpleasantly,
the spring.. it vanished forever!
The flowing of rivers was from their fleeing,
the shaking of the tall trees was from their instability,
and the ground got excavated.. and bought a pleasant wine
for the night parties of the bloodthirsty mammoths.

A hell-like gift of the rich to the poor.

A TRAVERS L'ETERNITE

Tout à travers l'éternité

La beauté dévoile sa forme exquise

Dans la solitude du néant

Elle tient un miroir devant son visage

Et contemple sa beauté.

Elle est la savante et le savoir

Celle qui voit et qui est vue ;

Aucun autre oeil que le sien

N'a jamais regardé par dessus l'univers.

Chacune de ses qualités trouve un expression

L'Eternité devient les champs verdoyants du Temps et de l'Espace :

L'amour, le don de vie, jardin de ce monde.

Chaque branche, chaque feuille, chaque fruit

Révèlent un aspect de Sa perfection.

Les cyprès révèlent un peu de Sa majesté,

La rose offre des nouvelles de Sa beauté.

Où que regarde la Beauté,

Regarde aussi l'amour ;

  THROUGH ETERNITY

All through eternity

Beauty unveils His exquisite form

in the solitude of nothingness;

He holds a mirror to His Face

and beholds His own beauty.

he is the knower and the known,

the seer and the seen;

No eye but His own

has ever looked upon this Universe.

His every quality finds an expression:

Eternity becomes the verdant field of Time and Space;

Love, the life-giving garden of this world.

Every branch and leaf and fruit

Reveals an aspect of His perfection-

They cypress give hint of His majesty,

The rose gives tidings of His beauty.

Whenever Beauty looks,

Love is also there;

Whenever beauty shows a rosy cheek

Love lights Her fire from that flame.

When beauty dwells in the dark folds of night

Love comes and finds a heart

entangled in tresses.

Beauty and Love are as body and soul.

Beauty is the mine, Love is the diamond.

They have together

since the beginning of time-

Side by side, step by step.

DOUCEUR ET DURETE

Le Sage a dit :

"L'homme naît doux et faible.

A sa mort il est dur et froid.

Les jeunes pousses sont tendres

et remplies de sève.

A leur mort elles se fânent et

se déssèchent.

Ainsi les êtres rigides et inflexibles

sont-ils les disciples de la mort,

tout comme les êtres doux et flexibles

sont les disciples de la vie."

GENTLENESS AND HARDNESS

The Sage says:

"A man is born gentle and weak.

At his death he is hard and cold.

Green plants are tender

and filled with sap.

At their death they are withered

and dry.

Therefore, the stiff and unbending

is the disciple of death.

The gentle and yielding

is the disciple of life."

POSSESSION

Nous sommes possédés

Par ce que nous possédons,

Asservis à la terre

Et soumis à des choses

Par l'attachement

Que nous avons pour elles.

Aussi sacrées qu'un calice,

Aussi insignifiantes qu'un galet.

(tao te ching)

POSSESSION

That we are possessed

By what we would possess:

Help in bondage to earth

And vested things by the attachements

We form for them...

Even so holy a thing

As a chalice

So slight a thing as a pebble.
