LA TOMBE D'UN SAGE

 

Voici la tombe d'un sage.

Cette parcelle de terre est honorée de le recevoir.

Que son corps trouve le repos en ce lieu.

Puisse la violence de sa mort

ne pas réveiller les tigres de l'outrage,

les dragons de la vengeance.

Puisse-t-elle, au contraire,

éveiller en nous la colombe de la paix,

le désir de pardonner.

Alors ensemble, dans ce lieu de recueillement,

nous pouvons nous réjouir

à la mémoire de ce sage

et effacer à jamais les larmes

du lion aveugle.

THE GRAVE OF A WISE MAN

 

This is the grave of a wise man.

This earth is honored to receive him.

May his bones find rest in this place.

And may his passing, in its violence,

not wake the tigers of outrage,

the dragons of vengeance.

May it rather, in its sadness,

wake nothing but the dove in us,

the lamb in others...

So that together,

in the bond of compassion,

we may rejoice

in the memory of this wise man

and wipe away forever the tears

from the eyes of the blind lion.
